From Strategic Planning to Strategic Execution

Setting a goal is not the main thing. It is deciding how you will go about achieving it and staying with that plan.” — Tom Landry, football coach

Finding the right strategy isn’t enough; success depends on how well it’s executed. After more than 30 years working in and with companies of all sizes we believe those companies which produce and grow Profits, consistently, focus on 4 things – Performance, Planning, Processes and People.

Profit Path ProcessWe call this the 5P Process. These 4Ps – Performance, Planning, People and Processes – produce the fifth P, Profits.

In the diagram they overlap because they are all in action at the same time; they intersect because they interact with each other and form a continuous loop. For example, Performance goals drive Planning; Processes keep the outcome of Planning on track; People use Processes to turn goals into results; Processes generate data showing how People’s results compare to Performance goals, implementation is adjusted via Planning and the company moves forwards.

Performance.

“….Words are words, explanations are explanations, promises are promises, but only performance is reality.” — Harold S. Geneen, ITT Corporation

Business owners set and communicate clear goals; make sure every employee understands his/her role in achieving them; compare actual results against the goals regularly, give feedback and adapt where necessary.

Planning.

“In preparing for battle, I have always found that plans are useless, but planning is indispensable” — General Dwight Eisenhower

Profitable companies understand the difference between planning – a process – and plans – an output. They make planning part of their culture and their lives.

People.

“Ideas are a dime a dozen. People who implement them are priceless.”
– Mary Kay Ash, Entrepreneur

Successful companies understand and accept that getting the right people and creating an environment in which they can contribute fully is absolutely crucial.

Processes.

“Most business people are not “process-oriented”; they are focused on tasks, on jobs….”
— Michael Hammer & James Champy

Functional processes keep a company operating efficiently; control processes give early warning of potential problems; and financial processes produce historical financial statements.
